I still think we should turn antartica into a world wide prison. All you would need for guards is a few ships to watch for floaters.
wouldn't need to land anything, just airdrop suplies to them and let the bastards build their own shelters and services.
This would make people think twice about commiting a crime

IIRC, your average cop walking a beat in London is not armed. That may have changed post-7/7. Special Operations officers, however, are armed to the freaking teeth with some of the nastiest hardware money can buy. ^_^
Oh, and as to the side discussion about police officers: we don't respect you because too many of your brethren have proven they have no respect for the rule of law. They're more than willing to bend or break laws in order to enforce. The DEA, BATFU, narcotics, vice, they've ruined it for you. Couple it with the officers who are just on the force so they have a shield for their bullying, and there you have it.
US officers are armed to the teeth. You get your standard issue 9mm or .45. Officers are also issued a vest but are not required to wear it. Officers are also given mace.
After special training officers can also carry the stun gun.
Now your standard patrol car also carries a 12 gauge shotgun that can be fitted with regular shot or bean bags. Some patrol cars also carry a AR-15 with armor piercing rounds (this was brought about after the bank robbery in california in '95 I believe where the robbers where in full metal and firing automatic ak-47's with AP rounds and were just demolishing the cops in the area)
Swat team members are generally issued MP-5's along with standard sidearms but they may also carry a tactical shotgun or a shorten down AR-15. They also get outfitted with flashbangs and smoke. They also receive training in explosives.
The newest in toys that I just got to witness the other day is pepper spray paintballs. Now those were just sweet.
